Art Movie Trailers: Annually there are two events where outstanding art movie trailers of the year and their creators are honored with awards. These are the Golden Trailer Awards which allow only trailers to be featured in the competition and the Key Art Awards of the Hollywood Reporter. The Key awards are for outstanding performance in print advertisements, posters, television spots and trailers. i.e. All the creative functions of movie advertising. The Key Awards Annual function is held at Hollywood's Kodak Theater.
Over the years there have been some art movie trailers that stood out for the creative processes applied in their making. These are: Voice-over clichés satirized in The Comedian art movie trailer satirizes. A specific trailer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy satirizes most common elements of movie trailers. In The Minus Man trailer there is a "special shoot" that has no actual movie footage but instead consists of two unnamed characters discussing the movie.
The Strange Days trailer with Lenny Nero, the central character played by Ralph Fiennes ( yes Fiennes ) talks striaght to the audience, hawking his business, which is experiences selling ( too good to be true!), and in which he dubs his persona as Santa Claus of the subconscious". The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind art movie trailers is made to firstly appear as a product commercial instead of a movie advertisement. In The Pick of Destiny trailer featuring Jack Black and Kyle Gass, The Tenacious D attempts to record a voice-over for a trailer, but humorously stumbles on line no 1. The lines used in the voice over and the voices they sport satirize the usual voice overs of movie trailers.
In art movie trailers, the trailer for Monty Python and the Holy Grail satirizes trailer forms but at the same time brilliantly advertises the film. The trailer has a background and auditions for trailers with first three pooh poohed until a Chinese-speaking man is selected for voice-over who goes on to say that while Ivan the Terrible, Seven Samurai, and The Seventh Seal of Bergman were wow, the Monty Python film is no great shakes. The trailer end has a advertisement for Chinese restaurant. Toys trailer had Robin Williams character, in a grassy field, urging film goers to see Toys.
Snakes on a Plane art movie trailers describe how the summer movies will feature swashbuckling pirates, giant stars, incredible superheroes, complex codes and animated adventures but they will be zilch when it comes to Snakes on a Plane. WALL-E trailer begins with an introduction by director Andrew Stanton saying in the summer of 1994 there was a lunch where he, Pete Docter, John Lasseter and Joe Ranft discussed films that would follow Toy Story. Their ideas resulted in Monsters, Inc.,A Bug's Life, and Finding Nemo. WALL-E was the last thing discussed that day. This is followed by a slick teaser.
